Violent clashes have erupted in Saint Soline dans les Deux Sèvres, France, over the construction of a large reservoir for agricultural irrigation.

Protesters gathered at the construction site against the plan which they believe would have a detrimental impact on the wetlands areas and the local wildlife.

The footage shows burned police vehicles, huge smoke clouds, and demonstrators in action.

According to Le Figaro, at least 5 people were injured. It has been reported that a group of violent protesters attacked police officers with iron bars.

According to police prefect Emmanuelle Dubée, at least 1,000 radical protesters have joined the unauthorised rally.
