Thousands of livestock washed away during Indonesian flash floods

Footage shows how thousands of livestock chickens have washed away and declared dead during Indonesian flash floods that took place near Kabupaten Cianjur on March 26.

According to livestock owner Asep Riswandi, around 2,200 of his chickens died due to the flood.

Asep estimated he suffered financial losses of up to tens of millions of rupiah.

Previously, floods hit a number of sub-districts in Cianjur Regency, with the worst occurring in Sukanagara District. As a result, hundreds of houses were submerged and the village bridge was broken.

Thousands of chickens died as a result of flash floods that hit Sukalaksana Village, Sukanagara District, Cianjur Regency, West Java, Sunday (26/3/2023). Most of them even washed away in the flood.
The flash flood occurred at 17.00 WIB, after previously it had rained heavily for several hours.

"The floods were caused by overflowing gutters after heavy rains. The overflow reached my settlement and chicken coop," said Asep Riswandi, a livestock owner.

According to him, the water level reached 50 centimeters, causing thousands of cattle in his two stables to be flooded. "My livestock is below, so when the flood immediately submerged," he said.

Asep revealed that around 2,200 of his chickens died due to the flood. In fact, about 1,200 of them were swept away.

"Most of them were washed away by the flood. Because the cages were also damaged by the flood currents. The rest died submerged in the livestock pens," he said.

As a result of this incident, continued Asep, he suffered losses of up to tens of millions of rupiah

"Losses of around tens of millions of rupiah. Because the chickens are washed away and die from being submerged, they will be harvested for the Eid," he concluded.
