Numerous manhole covers were overturned and water spouted from the sewers, reaching several meters high as torrential rain hit southern China.

The video was filmed in the city of Shenzhen in Guangdong Province on March 25.

A man was seen holding an umbrella to put the manhole covers back in their rightful places.

The Shenzhen Water Group responded quickly to the incident, stating that they arrived on the scene at around 1:00 pm and had successfully restored the situation by 2:00 pm.

Thankfully, no one was hurt during the incident and it didn't affect the flow of pedestrian or vehicle traffic.

Experts concluded that the cause was the extreme weather conditions, with the largest half-hour rainfall in the Nanshan district. The sudden and intense rainfall caused the water level in the culvert to surge and the air in the culvert to be compressed and overflow through the manhole covers.

The heavy rainwater also carried sediments from the pipes, causing it to spout out, which in turn caused the manhole covers to be forced open.

Fortunately, the pressure was released in just 30 seconds and the drainage system quickly returned to normal.

The video was provided by local media with permission.
