Thai jewellery shop makes face masks with gold chain straps
A jewellery shop is still doing a roaring trade - selling face masks with gold chain straps.
Goldsmiths at the Hangthong Duanpen have been handcrafting the expensive protective gear since the pandemic started three years ago in Chonburi province, Thailand.
Each accessory weighs 76 grams and is made from 96.5 purity gold - giving them a value of 340,290 Baht (8,073 GBP) at current prices on March 29.
With face masks now a staple part of people's outfits in Thailand - with many locals still wearing them religiously - the gold straps are receiving regular orders.
Footage shows the golden strap attached to a grey cloth mask. It was tried on by a customer and a store staff demonstrated how it was worn.
The shopkeeper Tantika said: ‘When the Covid-19 pandemic started around three years ago, people began using masks with fashionable straps.
‘We saw an opportunity and slightly modified the hooks of some gold chains to create mask straps.'
The manager added that they target individuals interested in fashion and gold buyers.
She said: ‘These mask straps can be fashionable accessories for everyone, including teenagers, adults, middle-aged individuals, and seniors.
‘If the mask trend fades away, these gold straps can be easily transformed into gold chains without damage.
As for the price, expect to pay a significant amount to achieve the fashionable look with an unsightly face mask.
Tantika added: ‘The chains weigh around 76 grams. So the current price is 340,290 Baht.'
The shop delivers across the country and overseas countries such as Australia, South Korea, and Japan.
