A young girl and a woman were pulled from the debris after a stepwell collapsed at a temple in Indore, Madhya Pradesh.

Footage from March 30 shows a rescue team hauling the two out from the caved-in pit at Beleshwar Mahadev temple.

According to reports, 36 people were killed in the incident and 14 have been successfully rescued.

Forty people have died and 14 have been rescued so far after the roof of a stepwell collapsed at a temple in central India's Madhya Pradesh.

The incident happened at the Beleshwar Mahadev temple on March 30.

Visuals showed the ongoing rescue operation where the police and State Disaster Emergency Response Force (SDERF) officials attempted to save the ones trapped. Ropes and ladders, which were being used in the operation, were seen. Chaos prevailed in the area after the mishap.

According to a report, Shivraj Singh Chauhan, the Madhya Pradesh chief minister, has announced an ex-gratia amount of Rs 5 lakh ( USD 6,081.41) to the kin of the deceased. Those injured will receive Rs 50,000 ($608.10). Chauhan along with other politicians also visited the injured at the hospital. It was learnt that the stepwell was full of water when people fell into it. The collapse of the roof also saw iron rods and debris fall on the people and the presence of water inside the stepwell made the rescue operation much more difficult. A case of culpable homicide was registered against the chairman and the secretary of temple trust.
