The Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park (BBTNBBS) and its partners have installed GPS collars on wild Sumatran elephants to mitigate negative interactions between humans and wild elephants.

The installation of GPS collars on the "Jambul" elephant group is the second time in the TNBBS area, following the installation on the "Bunga" elephant group on December 24, 2021.

The process of installing the GPS collar required an anesthesia shot given to an adult female elephant from the "Jambul" group, taking about 25 minutes.

The medical team also monitored the elephant and took blood samples for DNA, hematological, and blood chemistry analysis.

The installation of GPS collars is expected to help in the conservation efforts for Sumatran elephants and to address negative interactions between humans and elephants.
