Bizarre British Easter tradition in Greenwich sees men lift women above their HEAD on a CHAIR

This is the bizarre largely forgotten British Easter custom of 'chair heaving'.

The tradition, believed to have been common in England in the 18th and 19th centuries, has in recent years been revived by the Blackheath Morris Men.

Easter Lifting - or 'heaving' - involves a group of men lifting a woman sat in a floral decorated chair above their head and spun in the air.

According to English Heritage, the custom supposedly commemorates the raising of Christ from the dead at Easter.

It was reportedly banned in some parts of the country during the Victorian era.

In this footage, the Blackheath Morris are seen carrying out the Easter Lifting with volunteers from the crowd outside the Cutty Sark in Greenwich, London, and performing a traditional Morris dance.

The event this year took place on Easter Monday (April 10), in line with when the custom traditionally occurred.
