86 captive-bred giant tortoises of the Chelonidis hoodensis species have been released to their natural habitat on Espanola Island in the Galapagos by conservationists.

These tortoises, which belong to the critically endangered Hood Island subspecies, were bred in captivity on Santa Cruz Island and underwent a quarantine process before being transported to their new home by helicopter.

The release is part of a successful ecological restoration program that has been ongoing for over five decades and includes the repopulation of Espanola with tortoises, the main herbivores on the island.

The breeding program for the Espanola Island species was closed in 2021.
