A magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck southern Philippines shortly after midnight.

CCTV footage shows a family fleeing outside after the temblor rocked their home in Cantilan town, Surigao del Sur province, on April 14.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said the quake occurred at a depth of 66 kilometres at 12:04 AM and was centred 22 kilometres southwest of Madrid town in Surigao del Sur province.

PHIVOLCS said damage and aftershocks were expected.

The Philippines is an archipelago of more than 7,000 islands inside the Pacific 'Ring of Fire' where the majority of Earth's volcano eruptions and earthquakes happen.
