Driver flees with traffic warden on bonnet 'to escape parking ticket'
This is the bizarre moment a driver was seen fleeing with a traffic warden sitting on the bonnet while allegedly trying to escape from a parking ticket.
The jeepney bus was reportedly caught unloading passengers at the wrong spot, so officers had asked the driver to pull over in Manila City, the Philippines, on April 19.
But instead of stopping to speak with authorities, the defiant driver, later identified as Mharwen Areglado, kept on going prompting one of the enforcers to climb onto the vehicle to block him.
Dramatic CCTV footage shows the yellow and orange jeepney rushing to turn at a junction while the officer clung on the hood.
The other traffic enforcers appeared disoriented for a moment as they grasped which way to go. Soon after, one of the officers ran after the jeepney while the others went the other way to radio for support.
Driver Mharwen was caught ten minutes later when he was stuck at a red light stop with the enforcer still in front of his jeepney.
Speaking at the police station, traffic enforcer Melandro Alarcon said: ‘I was really nervous because he was driving too fast. He kept on arguing with me about the violation.'
Officers arrested the driver and charged him with direct assault, which can imprison him for up to two years. Meanwhile, his original traffic violation ticket would only have cost him 500 PHP (7.16 GBP).
At the police station, driver Mharwen said: ‘I want to apologise for what happened. It was not my intention to hurt anyone.'
Officers said will be held in police custody during the investigation.
