A mysterious hole has appeared in the road in the old mining village of Truthwall near St Just in south west Cornwall, on the scenic B3306 coast road from Land's End to St Ives. Local residents in nearby houses fear it might be caused by an old mine shaft collapsing, something that has previously happened in this area. It is a relatively common problem in Cornwall which has a long history of tin mining. Lots of exploratory shafts were made which but many were not mapped and so they often show up in random places. Some shafts are over 3000m deep. Consequently property values tend to fall if there are mineshafts found nearby.

The area has been coned off and the road shut to traffic until the problem has been solved.
