Buildings around Thailand were damaged when the ongoing heatwave brought tropical storms that slammed into the country on Sunday.

Footage shows a restaurant being battered by the strong wind and rain in Chiang Mai Province. It came as temperatures soared past 40 degrees Celsius last week during a heat wave across the Asia Pacific region.

Customer Wanichcha Friend was at the Art & Gallery cafe when the storm hit at around 5 PM. She said that the weather was initially still and very hot before the rainstorm and hail smashed into the building.

Fortunately, no one was injured, and the cafe only received minor damage. Wanichcha also added that she was surprised to see hail for the first time.

According to the Thailand Meteorological Department at 5 AM, it said that Northern Thailand would experience hot to very hot temperatures with day haze. Isolated thundershowers with gusty winds were expected mostly in Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Lamphun, Lampang, Phrae, Nan, Uttaradit, and Tak.

The Thai Meteorological Department warned that the southerly and southeasterly winds prevailing over upper Thailand would strengthen between April 23 and 26.

They said 17 provinces in the Northeast and another five provinces in the East were be affected on Sunday while centre regions would also be hit as the storm moves through the country.

Meanwhile, the moderate high-pressure system from China is expected to extend to the Northeast of Thailand and the South China Sea, leading to hot to very hot weather over the upper regions of the country.

Outbreaks of summer storms, accompanied by thunderstorms, gusty winds, hail, and lightning strikes, are expected to affect the northeastern and eastern parts of the country first, before spreading to other regions.
