Rare footage captures Far Eastern leopard kitten nursing in land of the Leopard National Park
In a heartwarming moment captured on camera on 23rd April, 2023, a young Far Eastern leopard kitten was seen nursing in the Land of the Leopard National Park in Vladivostok, Russia. The sighting was a rare glimpse into the world of these endangered animals, which are considered the rarest large feline in the world.
The young mother, a leopard named Leo 190F, was seen nursing her cub in a moment of tender connection between parent and child. The kitten is estimated to be between six and seven months old, an age when leopards typically switch from milk to meat. However, this particular kitten seems to be in no hurry to grow up, according to staff at the national park.
The Far Eastern leopard, also known as the Amur leopard, is native to the southwest of Primorsky Krai, in a small area near the border of China with Russia. A few individuals have also been spotted near the border with the DPRK. The population of these predators is concentrated in the national park "Land of the Leopard" in Primorye, where efforts are being made to protect and conserve the species.
As of 2022, there were 121 adult Amur leopards in the wild in Russian protected areas. The species is considered critically endangered, with habitat loss, poaching, and other human activities posing a significant threat to their survival. Conservation efforts in the Land of the Leopard National Park and other protected areas are crucial for the survival of these magnificent animals.
