April 24 is Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day
April 24 is Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day, the day when Armenians throughout the world mark the genocide by Ottoman Empire forces in 1915.
Mourners gathered in Yerevan, Armenia’s capital, among many other places, on the 108th anniversary.
According to an English-language report in the Armenian media, Hasan Cemal of the Turkish Green Left Party party took part in an Armenian Genocide Commemoration event in Istanbul on Monday. Cemal is the grandson of Ottoman military leader Djamal Pasha, widely seen as one of the overseers of the genocide.
Video seen here shows the Armenian community and Greek Cypriots outside the Turkish consulate in Thessaloniki, Greece’s second-largest city, on Monday.
The protestors began their march from Thessaloniki's central Aristotle Square and ended at the consulate, where they presented a petition calling for the recognition by the Turkish state of the genocide "of 1.5 million innocent Armenians in 1915 by the Turkish state" and the return of "illegally occupied historic Armenian territories to the Armenian people."
In 2021 Joe Biden became the first US president to use the word “genocide” to describe the killings and deportations. In a White House statement issued on Monday, Biden said: “Today, we pause to remember the lives lost during the Meds Yeghern—the Armenian genocide - and renew our pledge to never forget.
"Today, let us renew this pledge. Let us recommit to speaking out against hate, standing up for human rights, and preventing atrocities. And together, let us redouble our efforts to forge a better future - one where all people can live with dignity, security, and respect.”
Turkey rejected Biden's comments and denies that a genocide took place.
