This is the nail-biting moment police officers aid wildlife catchers in lassoing a large alligator that casually strolled down city roads.

Footage from the North Charleston Police Department (NCPD) - shows the risky operation, which took place in the city of North Charleston, in the US state of South Carolina, on April 22.

The NCPD assisted animal control officers as they tried to wrangle the hissing gator using a snare pole and rope.

After a few failed attempts, officers were able to capture the wild reptile that kept baring its teeth at them, trying to scare them away.

The NCPD said in a statement: 'It's not every day you see an alligator crossing the road in North Charleston.

'NCPD officers assisted Department of Natural Resources officers in safely removing an alligator at Montague Ave. and Mall Drive.

'It was relocated. See ya later gator!'

Police did not specify where the alligator was relocated to.

Earlier this year, the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) cautioned residents to be careful around alligators as the weather gets warmer.

Alligators tend to be more active in warm weather and can be found in almost any water body.

To stay safe, SCDNR suggests avoiding contact with alligators since they can move quickly in short bursts.
