Mystery power outage leaves thousands of passengers stranded in one of 'world's worst airport' in the Philippines
A mystery power outage left thousands of passengers stranded in one of ‘world's worst airports'.
The official cause for the interruption is still unidentified as investigations are ongoing but authorities are pointing to a ‘fault current' that affected almost 14,000 passengers at the Ninoy Aquino National Airport in Manila, the Philippines, on public holiday May 1.
At least 48 flights with almost 9,400 passengers were cancelled, while some 4,000 guests on other flights had delayed trips.
Footage shows chaos inside the Terminal 3 of the notorious airport as passengers wait for the status of their trips during the electricity interruption.
A furious passenger Reynand Luarez said: ‘This day was supposed to be special. But we were surprised to have cancelled flights. I had no choice but to rebook. It ruined family gatherings.'
In response, Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) General Manager Cesar Chiong apologised to the affected passengers. He said: ‘On behalf of the MIAA management, we really would like to extend our apologies to all the passengers and everyone that were affected by this power interruption.'
Meanwhile, Manila Electric Company (Meralco) Manager Engineer Noel Espiritu from the team who did the repairs said they had to change a component to fix the issue.
He said: ‘We saw a component that needed to be changed, and that was because of the current that passed through the component, stressing it. We immediately changed it and restored the power.'
The cause of the incident is still being investigated.
American luggage app Bounce cited the Ninoy Aquino International Airport as world's worst airport for business class travellers. It ranked bottom 38th out of 38 busy airports all over the world.
