A school principal was in for the scare of his life when a bear jumped out of a backyard dumpster in West Virginia.

The CCTV camera footage was shared by the Nicholas County Board of Education as it showed Zela Elementary School Principal, James Marsh, as he removed the lock bar early on May 1st.

The lid was unlocked and the black bear poked it's head out which shocked Mr Marsh as he sprinted for his life.

Fortunately, the bear was equally scared as it clambered out of the dumpster and ran in the other direction.

“Who says principals don't deserve hazard pay?” the school district wrote alongside the video on Facebook.

The school recently installed the dumpster latch after seeing signs that an animal had been in the trash. Per reports, the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources helped upgrade the lock later that day.
