Convenience stores install car charging stations in burgeoning EV hub Thailand
Convenience stores around Thailand have installed car charging stations in the burgeoning electric vehicle hub in Southeast Asia.
CP All CPL, operator of 7-11 in Thailand, collaborated with the Provincial Electricity Authority, Metropolitan Electricity Authority, and private partners to install the charging docks in 24 branches across Bangkok and Pattaya.
This includes 7-11 outlet at Bali Hai Pier in Pattaya, where the 'fastest electric vehicle charger in Thailand' was built.
The convenience store chain said it has been using around 1,000 EVs since last year, with a plan to use 1,035 more in 2023 to reduce carbon emissions, which some scientists believe cause the earth to become warmer.
Thailand is emerging as a potential EV hub in Southeast Asia, with the country already a popular destination for EV manufacturers and investors, along with Indonesia.
Tesla and Chinese conglomerate are battling for the share of the EV market in the country.
Thai officials this February allocated a budget to subsidise EV battery production in Thailand, resulting in lower prices of the vehicles in the domestic market, local media reported.
Despite EVs appearing to be more environmentally friendly, politicians and corporate behemoths appear to have turned a Nelsonian eye to the impact of mining for the minerals needed for battery production, with rogue state China being blamed for child slavery, corruption and mass landscape degradation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
