Buddhist novices underwent a rodeo-like ordination to become fully-fledged monks.

Footage shows the initiates going through the unusual ordination parade in Ban Non-Salao village in Chaiyaphum province, Thailand, on May 2.

The novices, referred to as nagas, sat on bamboo platforms carried by villagers as they are paraded to a temple with a marching band.

En route to their destination, the villagers shake the wooden seat - much like a rodeo ride - with the nagas doing their best not to fall.

The rites are led by young local women and the nagas' relatives and friends. It is said to be a test of the would-be monks' strength and determination to be ordained.
