Outrage as visitor feeds panda Coke at Chinese zoo
A shocking video captured on April 29 at Dafenggang Zoo in Yancheng City, Jiangsu Province, has shown a giant panda being scared by a bottle of Coke that was thrown to her by a tourist.
In the footage, the 5-year-old panda named Zhensheng was seen attempting to open the bottle when the liquid suddenly spewed out, frightening the animal. She was then seen running away quickly.
Feeding pandas any kind of food or drink is strictly prohibited, and zoo officials have condemned the behaviour. A spokesperson for the zoo confirmed that the animal was unharmed and that a zookeeper quickly intervened to bring Zhensheng into the house and remove the bottle.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage on social media, with many calling for greater protection for these beloved animals. A netizen commented on Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok, saying, "I really hope that all panda enclosures can require identity verification when purchasing tickets, with cameras monitoring in all directions. People like this should be punished."
Zhensheng, a female panda, was born on August 3, 2017, and was brought to Dafenggang Zoo from Ya'an Bifengxia Giant Panda Sanctuary from China Conservation and Research Centre for Giant Pandas in Sichuan Province in August 2020.
The video was provided by local media with permission.
