Firefighters battled a large fire along the Virgin River in St. George, Utah, USA, on May 9th, 2023. The fire broke out around 3 p.m. near a residential area at 2580 E. Waters Edge Circle, just south of the Virgin River near Mall Drive. Fire departments from across Washington County responded to the scene to fight the blaze.

Although the cause of the fire is currently unknown, it is suspected to have been a controlled burn that got out of control. The fire spread quickly, covering an estimated 40 acres and threatening more than 100 structures. Some residents in nearby condos were urged to voluntarily evacuate, but no mandatory evacuations were ordered.

State fire managers reported that the fire was mostly contained within two hours of firefighters being called to the scene. By 8 p.m., the fire was 100% contained, and there were no injuries or structures lost.

St. George Fire Chief Robert Stoker warned that this fire season could be tough in southern Utah due to the wet winter and rainy spring, which have created new vegetation growth on top of years of dead fuels just beneath the surface. @cairochris who captured a clip of the fire commented "Fire along the Virgin River currently…about a half mile from my place."
