Two ferocious monitor lizards were seen wrestling for dominance in a dirty canal.

Footage shows the warring reptiles as they splashed through the polluted water in Bangkok, Thailand. The creatures rolled around as onlookers watched them from a bridge nearby.

The pair kept on fighting until they reached the drain and locked each other in a tight hug.

Onlooker Weeraphan Kaiwinit said: ‘The lizards didn't want to back down. It was a fierce battle.'

Asian water monitor lizards normally live in canals, swamps, sewers and ponds in cities in Thailand. They feed on fish, snakes, frogs and scraps of food left by humans.

The reptiles are aggressive when threatened and have a mildly venomous bite which sometimes carries harmful bacteria. The Godzilla-like reptiles are also a protected species in the country so their population thrives.
