Great Spotted Woodpecker uses a metal bracket to amplify its loud drumming sound

Buy video

I came across an interesting observation at a bird feeding station. A Great spotted woodpecker was using a metal bracket to amplify its drumming sound to convey its territorial dominance to other woodpeckers nearby. Woodpeckers normally peck trees to feed on grubs but also make this drumming sound especially in the springtime to hold territores and to attract a mate.
The footage was captured at Foulshaw Moss Nature Reserve, Cumbria on the 1st May 2023
