A security camera captured the moment a large passenger ship crashed into a pier in the coastal city of Ternate, Indonesia.

CCTV footage recorded on May 10 and released by state-owned Indonesian ferry operator PT ASDP Indonesia Ferry shows the moment the vessel slams into a section of the pier.

Fortunately, a couple of workers managed to flee the scene before a part of the damaged pier sank into the sea. No injuries were reported.

The inter-island ferry was supposed to dock at Dock 1 but strong currents caused the vessel to collide with the pier.

PT ASDP Indonesia Ferry General Manager Justan Gaffaru said the damage caused was more than 25 billion Indonesian rupiahs (£1,347,560).

Dock 1 has been closed as an investigation and repair work continues.

The ferry KMP Mutiara Pertiwi I collided with the Bastiong Ferry Crossing pier in the city of Ternate, North Maluku on Wednesday, May 10th, 2023 at around 3:48 PM WIT. Fortunately, there were no casualties in the incident, although the pier and the moored ship, KMP Baronang belonging to ASDP Ternate, were also affected. CCTV footage and viral videos circulating online showed the ferry crashing into the bridge as it passed by the side of the pier at high speed.

According to information obtained, the ferry was supposed to dock to serve the V trip across Bastiong - Sofifi at 3:48 PM WIT at Dock 1, but a mistake occurred during the maneuver. The ferry could not be controlled and was hit by strong currents, causing it to collide with Dock 1.

Dock 1 was completely destroyed and cannot conduct any service activities. Justan Gaffaru, the General Manager of PT ASDP Indonesia Ferry Ternate Branch, stated that the estimated losses incurred were above Rp 25 billion. It is known that the KMP Mutiara Pertiwi I is privately owned and has an operating permit for the Bastiong-Sofifi route.

ASDP Ternate is waiting for a complete chronology of the incident from the ship owner to request accountability. Although Dock 1 suffered severe damage, ASDP is attempting to optimize services by using Dock 2. However, this incident will undoubtedly impact ferry services in the city of Ternate and take time to repair the destroyed dock.
