A large river crocodile, reaching more than 3.5 meters, was caught by the Padang City Fire and Rescue Service, Friday afternoon (12/5/2023) at 16.00 WIB from the Bangek River, Lubuk Minturun, Koto Tangah District, Padang City.

Four firefighters who immediately went down to the river caught it manually when the crocodile appeared to the surface of the water which was relatively shallow, around 50 centimeters. After being snared with a rope, an officer tried to jump over the crocodile to catch its head.

However, the crocodile dodged and tried to attack the officers with its tail wagging and its mouth gaping open. Bravely, the officer returned to add a rope to the head of the crocodile who was already panicking. Until the officers were forced to tussle with crocodiles to tame them.

Even though they were a little overwhelmed by the hungry crocodile, the four firefighters, assisted by several residents, continued to thrash the crocodile by attaching a noose to the crocodile's body, which continued to squirm. Until finally the crocodile gave up and was lifted out of the river.

"We received a report from residents at 15.14 WIB, that someone saw a crocodile with a fairly large size entering his garden, because he was surprised, the residents reported it to us," said Sutan Hendra, Head of Padang City Fire and Rescue.

After being contacted by the firefighters, they arrived at the location at 16.00 WIB and an hour later the river crocodile was rescued from the river. The appearance of this crocodile caused unrest for local residents, so they needed to be evacuated.

"After evacuating the crocodile, we took it to the Padang Fire Department office and handed it over to the Padang BKSDA office for further handling," concluded Sutan.
