This is the dramatic moment a chemical 'mega explosion' erupted killing one and injuring five in a suburban home in Thailand.

Shocking CCTV footage shows the powerful blast ripping through the house in the Bang Yai district of Nonthaburi province just north of the capital Bangkok on Sunday afternoon.

Several more explosions followed, showering the neighbourhood street in burning sparks, from the shed where chemicals for welding copper were being mixed.

Police officers and fire crews arrived at the two-storey home to find the smouldering wreckage strewn across the street.

Worker Prasom Pholah, 49, who was in charge of mixing the volatile compounds, was found dead at the scene, while three men and one woman were rushed to the Bang Yai Hospital after inhaling the fumes. Another person suffered minor injuries and declined to be hospitalised.

At least five other houses in the area had been damaged by the explosion.

Homeowner Arthon Chomsaohat, 61, said his wife, mother-in-law, and sister-in-law were inside the house during the explosion. Neighbours said they heard a series of four blasts happening in quick succession.

Firefighter Pandeecha Kamutarat, 44, said: 'The fire was incredibly fierce and had engulfed the front of the house and a car inside the garage. I was spraying water on it, but I felt a stinging sensation from the burning chemicals.'

Local media reported that the blaze was put out at around noon.

Police Colonel Ronnaphat Tumtimthongchai of the Bang Yai Police Station said: 'The house where the accident occurred was a business which has been mixing chemicals for welding copper to make wires and signal cables since 2013.

'They hired Prasom to handle the mixing of various chemical powders including aluminium, copper, and magnesium.'

Authorities said they were investigating the cause of the explosion and estimating the damage.
