Cops inspect $30k worth of banned sex toys after large seizure in Bangkok
Police were today inspecting $30k worth of sex toys seized from an illegal shop in Thailand.
Officers confiscated 1,066 illegal dildos in various shapes and sizes before three dealers at a suspected sex toy storehouse in Bangkok. There was also synthetic vaginas and wearable rubber breasts in the large haul.
Officers said that Tanayong Naha, 29, Karnrawee Charassilapaship, 27, and Ailada Tanoi, 32, were detained by cops on suspicion of smuggling the prohibited goods, which are banned in the conservative Southeast Asian country.
Police Major General Athip Wongsiwaphai, the commander of the Technology Crime Suppression Division (TCSD), said the raid came after officers were shown sponsored ads for the toys being sold through Facebook.
He said: 'During the investigation, it was discovered that the smuggled sex toys were being imported from China and distributed to various distributors, who each earned a 50 per cent commission for their sales.
'The total value of the orders from China was more than 30,000 dollars.'
Officers gathered evidence before requesting a warrant from the Minburi Criminal Court to search the premises.
Suspects Tanayong and Karnrawee allegedly admitted to ordering the toys from China, while Ailada reportedly confessed to running the online sales page for two years.
Athip said they were charged with trading illegal goods, aiding in concealing and distributing illegal goods, and violating the Customs Act and Consumer Protection Act.
Police said they will continue investigations to track down other individuals involved.
Sex toys are banned in Thailand under Section 287 of the Criminal Code covering obscenity. Violators may be fined around $180, jailed for three years, or both.
Recently, politicians seeking to woo voters have promised to decriminalise sex toys ahead of the country's general elections amid easing fears that the devices could lead to a breakdown in society.
