This is the dramatic moment a passenger was struck by falling electric wires when a truck crashed into an electricity pole in Thailand.

CCTV footage shows the white lorry careening off the road into a utility pole in the Bang Sao Thong district of Samut Prakan province just south of Bangkok on May 13.

The collision caused another post further down the road to topple over onto a busy intersection, with the electric cables clotheslining a construction worker who was riding on the back of a pick-up truck.

Bystanders rushed to check on his condition and call for help.

Police officers from the Bang Sao Thong district station and an ambulance were dispatched to the scene, where three people suffered minor injuries. The wounded were taken to a nearby hospital.

Motorcycle rider Somporn Buarod, 40, said he was crossing the intersection with his girlfriend when he saw the electric post collapsing. He shouted for his partner to flee before jumping off the two-wheeler himself to avoid the falling pole. His motorcycle was found damaged at the scene.

Meanwhile, the truck driver, who was not named, allegedly told police he had dozed off while driving, causing the crash. He was summoned by cops to the police station for further legal proceedings.

The local electric company was repairing the damaged poles.

Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.

However, a lack of road safety education in schools, cheap loans for cars, notoriously easy driving tests, police failures to enforce road laws as well as endemic corruption and chronic under-investment in infrastructure hamper the efforts.
