A tailgating car caused another driver to smash into a motorway barrier in UAE.

Footage shows the car, a dark sedan, driving dangerously close to the vehicle in front of it but as it tried to overtake it on the hard shoulder, it clipped it and both vehicles were sent hurtling across all four lanes towards the central reservation.

The tailgating car appeared to pull away at the last second, grinding along the barrier, but the other vehicle, a grey car, hits it head-on before bouncing off it and coming to a stop in the middle of the road.

The footage was obtained from the Abu Dhabi Police, who said they were releasing it to warn motorists about 'not leaving a sufficient safety distance'.

The police reportedly said that drivers found to be tailgating would be fined AED 400 (GBP 87.33) and have four points taken off their licence.

They added that drivers who cause accidents would have to pay an AED 5,000 (GBP 1,091) fine.

The Abu Dhabi Police has said that penalties have been increased in a bid to tackle tailgating, which it said is a leading cause of serious traffic accidents.
