Smoke from wildfires in Alberta enveloped Calgary and the surrounding areas on Tuesday, May 16, creating an eerie atmosphere and reducing visibility to alarming levels. The thick haze blanketed the city, casting an ominous shadow over its streets and neighbourhoods.

In response to the deteriorating air quality, both Environment and Climate Change Canada and Alberta Health Services promptly issued a special air quality statement for a significant portion of the province. The statement served as a stark warning, urging residents to exercise caution and take necessary precautions to protect their health.

The advisory highlighted the potential health risks associated with prolonged exposure to the smoke. Individuals with pre-existing respiratory conditions or other vulnerable groups were urged to take extra care and consult healthcare professionals if experiencing any symptoms or discomfort related to the poor air quality.

On Tuesday afternoon, Alberta Wildfire information unit manager Christie Tucker revealed that a staggering 86 wildfires are currently ravaging Alberta's forest protection areas, with 24 of them classified as out of control.

Emergency officials are sounding the alarm, warning that the unpredictable forecast in the coming days is expected to intensify the risk of extreme fire behaviour, heightening the already perilous conditions on the ground.
