Sumatran tiger dies in pig snare at Pasaman resident's farm in West Sumatra
Pasaman Regency, West Sumatra - An unexpected incident took place on Tuesday (16/5) in Jorong Tikalak, Nagari Tanjung Beringin, Pasaman Regency, West Sumatra. A Sumatran tiger, scientifically known as Panthera Tigris Sumatrae, became trapped in the vicinity of a local residents' plantation.
Munawar, a 52-year-old resident who discovered the tiger, immediately reported the finding to the Acting Head of Section I for Conservation of the West Sumatra Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA Sumbar), Rusdiyan P. Ritonga. Upon receiving the report, the Lubuk Sikaping Police Chief contacted the BKSDA Sumbar call center to inform them of the incident.
In a swift response, the BKSDA Sumbar's Wild Animal Rescue Team and the Panti Natural Resources Conservation (KSDA) Resort were dispatched to the scene. This rapid action was taken to ensure the safety of the trapped Sumatran tiger and protect the surrounding residents.
Rusdiyan P. Ritonga stated that the handling of the trapped Sumatran tiger is regulated by Law Number 5 of 1990 concerning the Conservation of Biological Natural Resources and their Ecosystems. Therefore, the BKSDA Sumbar coordinated with the Lubuk Sikaping Police and the Pasaman Raya Forest Management Unit to maintain the safety of the local residents.
Subsequently, the BKSDA Sumbar communicated with the Kinantan Wildlife and Cultural Park (TMSBK) in Bukittinggi to request assistance from a veterinarian in the evacuation of the tiger. The plan is to observe and evaluate the condition of the trapped Sumatran tiger at TMSBK Bukittinggi to determine whether it requires rehabilitation or translocation.
The Sumatran tiger, which is critically endangered, is one of Indonesia's natural treasures that needs to be protected diligently. It is hoped that through the collaboration of various stakeholders, this tiger can be saved and provided with appropriate care to enable it to thrive once again in its natural habitat.
