An injured fur seal strangled by plastic trash was rescued on a beach in Argentina.

Footage shows the young seal, a male South American fur seal (Arctocephalus australis), being carried to a pickup truck by two men from the Mundo Marino Foundation, in San Clemente del Tuyu, Argentina, on May 11.

The seal can be seen with a deep laceration to its neck caused by the strap, which was then cut and removed after the seal was given an anaesthetic.

The Mundo Marino Foundation workers can then be seen thoroughly cleaning its deep wound.

The images then show the young seal recovering at the centre.

A statement from the Mundo Marino Foundation said: 'A resident of the coastal town of Aguas Verdes notified the Mundo Marino Foundation of the presence of the animal on the beach, warning that it had a strange element in the area of its neck.

'Upon arrival, the rescuers found that the animal had a deep wound in that area of its body caused by a plastic strap.'

The statement said that the male South American fur seal was rescued in Aguas Verdes with a deep wound around its neck, caused by the plastic strap, which they said was commonly used in industrial packaging.

Sergio Rodriguez Heredia, a biologist and the head of the Mundo Marino Foundation Rescue Centre, said that usually, they would try to leave the seal in the wild but in this case, its injuries were too severe and it required treatment.

Bianca Mancini, a veterinary doctor at the Mundo Marino Educational Park and the Mundo Marino Foundation, said that they performed a full checkup on the seal and determined that the wound was infected and went deeper than first thought.

Blood results showed that the seal was suffering from anaemia.

Mancini said that they were hopeful that the seal would recover, saying: 'Although he has good body condition and attitude, the prognosis is guarded.'

The young animal will remain at the Rescue Centre for as long as it needs to recover, the statement added.
