A starving stray dog stuck under an abandoned well was rescued.

The brown pooch was skin and bones when a concerned local discovered it trapped on the bottom of the pit in Nakhon Si Thamarat province, Thailand on March 26.

It was crying in the 10ft-deep hole covered by dried grass and overgrowth when it was found at the plantation.

A local animal hospital rescue team arrived to help evacuate the creature before it was taken back to the village.

Footage shows the whimpering dog looking up from the well. The volunteers hooked its limbs with a noose and carried it up.

Wildlife rescue worker Rattatam Ubonkarn said: ‘It wagged its tail when it was being freed. He was so happy to be out of the hole.

'The area where it was found was secluded, so it was not found immediately. We are not sure how long the dog had been down there.'

The pooch was fed at the village, where residents promised to take care of it.
