Police have seized cocktails made from cannabis and the drug kratom from the room of an alleged cannibal monk accused of killing and eating more than 80 cats .

Officials from the Watchdog Thailand Foundation and the Chachoengsao Provincial Office of Buddhism raided the room of Porndanai Ketkaew or Phra Kim, 23, after he was arrested yesterday for allegedly torturing and butchering moggies he had adopted from local pet owners.

The team confiscated two plastic boxes of cannabis, numerous cough syrup bottles, five cannabis bongs, a knife, an axe, and a haul of frozen kratom cocktails in the cramped quarters at the Wat Trai Saranakhom temple in Chachoengsao province, Thailand, on May 18.

Prathip Poonlarp from the Chachoengsao Provincial Office of Buddhism said he had planned to interview the temple's abbot, but the religious leader was sick at the time.

He added that the Buddhist office was going to sentence Porndanai, but since he has been defrocked, it is up to police to prosecute him.

Porndanai was detained after the Watchdog Thailand Foundation dug up dozens of charred cat carcasses near his room yesterday.

He had reportedly been using Facebook to find and adopt cats from troubled pet owners who could not take care of them properly. After bringing the pets home, he allegedly would torture them before burning their corpses and burying them.

He was remanded in police custody at the Bang Pakong Police Station and charged with animal cruelty, with police opposing his bail.

Prathip said: 'If Porndanai were still a monk, he would have faced severe disciplinary action for violating a sacred precept of Buddhism since he had killed several cats.

'Following this case, the temple's abbot is urged to exercise caution and more carefully select deserving individuals for ordination.'
