This is the heartwarming moment a kind driver rescued an injured fishing cat struck by a car in Thailand.

The motorcycle rider was travelling through Phang Nga province at night on May 20 when he noticed the weakened animal lying in the middle of the road after apparently being hit by a vehicle.

Footage shows how the man picked up the stricken feline from the tarmac as it was unable to move on its own.

Since he could not take it home, the driver instead moved the fishing cat to the grass on the roadside, vowing to get some help if it was still there the next day.

The following morning, on his way to work, he noticed that the injured creature was still lying in the same spot where he had left it.

He called the Phang Nga Wildlife Breeding Station, and wildlife officers arrived to take the animal to safety.

He said: 'I'm relieved because I know that the fishing cat is now in safe hands. I hope other people do the same if they encounter any injured wildlife.'

The fishing cat belongs to the Felidae family and is classified under the Prionailurus genus.

It shares its genus with other feline species such as the leopard cat, flat-headed cat, and rusty-spotted cat.

The fishing cat is listed as a vulnerable species on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List and is also included in CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) Appendix II.
