Shaken tourists and crew rescued when tour boat sinks in Thailand
Tourists and crew were rescued when their tour boat capsized off an island in Thailand.
The holidaymakers - two Australians, two Dutch and a Swiss backpacker - had visited James Bond island and Koh Panyi island in Phang Nga province on a sightseeing trip on May 22.
They were on their way back to the Sam Chong Nuea Pier in the afternoon when their long-tailed boat reportedly lost control and flipped over one nautical mile away from the pier, plunging them into the water.
The passengers, tour guide, and boat captain were left drifting at sea before passing boats picked them up and took them safely ashore. There were no injuries as they were all wearing life vests.
Police Captain Ratchanika Chuensra of the Takua Thung district police station said: 'The passengers were taken to the Surakul Pier. None of them were wounded, but some of their belongings were damaged.'
The seven people onboard were identified by officers as Dutch tourists Thijs Wouter De vogt and Cornelis Adriannus Antonius Van Rijsbergen. There was also Australian nationals Christian Ver Humang-it Buctot and Cheri Pia Plando along with Swiss national Andrea Katharina Bernet.
The Thai crew were tour guide Orasa Sae-ngow, 56, and boat operator Abdulloh Chonlakit, 54, who both lived locally.
Orasa said: 'We departed from the pier at 10 am on May 22 to visit James Bond island and Koh Panyi which were part of the itinerary. While we were returning at 1 pm, the boat lost its balance and we all fell at sea. We were lucky there were boats nearby to help us.'
Police Captain Ratchanika said two iPhone 14 Pro phones, an iPhone 14 Pro Max, an iPhone 12 Pro Max, a Samsung A9 pro, two Airpods, three power banks, two passports, and 13,800 THB (400 USD) in cash were damaged.
The tour company's insurance will provide compensation for the losses.
The incident comes a week after a tour speedboat crashed into a concrete post in Phuket, injuring 37 people. Its driver Sathit Maschai, 29, was allegedly high on meth and was arrested for causing injury to others.
