An army of ducks waddled across a road - blocking drivers that were forced to stop in the traffic jam.

Footage shows hundreds of feathered creatures taking small but swift steps to move from one rice field to another in Nueva Ecija province, the Philippines, on April 16.

The smart birds didn't seem to have their caretaker guiding them around but knew exactly where to go.

While the animals followed a single line, the patient motorists waited for them to reach the other end safely.

Bus conductor Joshua Palacio who was in one of the stalled vehicles said: ‘We thought it would take us a while before we could pass through. They were too many.

‘But the ducks walked really fast. We enjoyed the short rest from our trip.'

Ducks are excellent pest control animals as they eat a variety of insects, including snails and grubs that damage crops. In neighbouring Thailand, British breed Khaki Campbell ducks are set loose in rice paddies to clean it up before planting season in a long-standing tradition called ‘ped lai thoong.'
