Warning issued for Bank Holiday trippers to 'be cliff aware' as erosion threatens East Sussex coast

Warnings have been issued for Bank Holiday Monday day-trippers to "be cliff aware" as sudden collapses have been occurring at the chalk cliffs in East Sussex.

Matt Pavitt of HM Coastguard said: "We’re reminding everyone to stay safe. Warning signs are there for a reason. Keep away from the cliff edge and the base of cliffs when on the beach. Don’t risk going to the edge to take a selfie – no photograph is worth risking your life for."

Footage shows the fall by the iconic Belle Tout Lighthouse, now a guest house that stands on the cliff edge.

"It has happened in the last couple of days", explained the filmer.

In an article published on May 2 by the Mirror, travel reporter Milo Boyd explained that tourists have recently been seen perilously close to the edge.

"Spray paint has been put on as a marker, probably by the coastguard, to see if the cliff is getting more unstable", said the filmer of this clip.
