"It was just after sunrise, during an early morning (May 24) in the Kruger National Park, when I heard the roar of a lion, not too far from where I live. I decided to get in a game viewer vehicle on my own and go and see if I can find this lion out in the bush. I was driving around the area for about half an hour and couldn’t find anything. The lion also didn’t roar again, making it difficult to relocate. I was about to give up, sitting at a junction of two roads looking for tracks, when suddenly a big and majestic looking male lion came strolling along one of the roads from a distance. I couldn’t believe my luck and started filming the beautiful moments that followed. The big male lion, with a big fat belly, casually walked straight in my direction. I could see the vapour as the lion was breathing out the cold morning air with the golden light serving for a beautiful backdrop. I couldn’t believe it when the male lion turned into the junction I was sitting at. The male lion didn’t even look at me, walking right past the vehicle a mere few meters. The male lion came to a standstill right behind my vehicle. I managed to capture the lion standing behind my vehicle by filming into my driver’s side mirror. The male lion then continued up the road before stopping again, scanning his territory. The next moment the lion let loose his almighty roar, sending his message through the bush, that is audible up to eight kilometres away. Being so close to that roaring sound is something hard to explain. It’s like one serious boombox beating through your body. One incredible experience. The lion looked around, carefully listening for any other lions answering back. After a while the male lion went to lie down and after another five minutes, the male lion sent out one last powerful roar across the wilderness, letting all know that he is the king, and he is around and present. Spending this good half an hour with such an incredible beast is something I will carry with me for a long time," said the filmer.
