This is the terrifying moment the Volcan de Fuego erupted spewing large clouds of ash in Guatemala.

Footage shows the volcano, which sits 16 kilometres west of tourist city Antigua, belching a tall smoke plume after exploding on April 22. Loud rumbling can be heard during the eruption.

The National Institute for Seismology, Vulcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology of Guatemala (INSIVUMEH) reported that around four to 12 explosions per hour were recorded at the volcano between April 18 to 25, causing plumes as high as one kilometre during the seismic unrest.

The Volcan de Fuego or 'Volcano of Fire' is an active stratovolcano that has erupted numerous times in the past decade.

In 2018, rivers of lava poured down its slopes killing at least 215 people and leaving hundreds more missing.
