Chinese scavengers sparked fury after appearing to raid British war graves to steal metal from sunken ships off the coast of Malaysia.

The Chinese-registered Chuan Hong 68 reportedly entered Malaysian waters through Pasir Gudang City to salvage valuable metal from the wreckage of British World War II ships HMS Repulse and HMS Prince of Wales.

Footage shows the grab dredger lifting scrap metal from the war graves off Kuantan city in Pahang state.

Johor state police have also discovered unexploded ordnance in the Kota Tinggi district allegedly being used for the illegal scrapping activities. They later detonated the explosives, as seen in the video.

The British High Commission has condemned the 'deplorable' salvors who they said were unlawfully desecrating the war graves.

The HMS Repulse and HMS Prince of Wales sank in the South China Sea in 1941 during the Japanese invasion of Malaya.
