Rare Fata Morgana optical illusion seen off Kent, UK coast

Buy video

Several motor yachts proceeding down the River Thames, UK appeared to hover above the sea this morning (May 27), in a rare and 'mind-bending' optical illusion known as Fata Morgana - as seen from Kent.
.
A Fata Morgana is a form of mirage - an optical effect where light rays can bend over long distances to make distant objects appear to 'hover' above the natural horizon - given the right weather conditions.

The ghostly effect could be seen as the boats came 'round the corner' of Thames, which is to the west of Sheerness.

Once the vessels were directly north of Sheerness and therefore closer they 'returned back to sea level' as normal.
