A government official has been suspended after he ordered an entire reservoir in Chattisgarh to be drained so he could retrieve his dropped phone.

Rajesh Vishwas, a food inspector, dropped his Samsung phone into the body of water before demanding the Kherkatta dam to be emptied.

A 30-horsepower pump was deployed to drain more than 2 million litres of water from the dam.

In a statement to local media, Vishwas had claimed he had contacted a sub-divisional officer for permission to drain “some water” into a nearby canal.

This March was India's hottest since records began 122 years ago.

After the matter came to light , kanker district collector Priyanka shukla sought a report in this regard . She issued a show cause notice to the sub divisional officer of water resource department RC Dhivar for allegedly giving verbal permission to drain out water from the reservoir

Accused officer Rajesh vishwas is also suspended from immediate effect .
