Monster backhoe dredger Goliath digging spoil from the seabed at Harwich Harbour, deepening the main navigation channel for extremely large container ships calling at the Port of Felixstowe, 21 May 2023

Backhoe Dredger Goliath is one of the world's largest of it's kind, essentially a backhoe digger mounted on a specialised barge, which can dredge as deep as 30 metres. Here at Felixstowe, it is scooping up spoil and boulders from between 16 and 20 meters below the water level, depending on the state of the tide.
A major dredging project at Harwich Harbour, the home of Felixstowe, the UK's largest container port, is deepening the port's main navigation channels to allow even larger ship to call at the quays.
The Port of Felixstowe currently accomodates the world's largest container ships, around 400 metres long by up to 62 metres wide, but ships are predicted to grow longer and wider - and deeper, too, so having deeper channels is essential!
This video was filmed by me, Chris Gosling, on a Panasonic HC-770 HD camcorder.
More footage of this and other ships are available.
