Watch all the thrills and spills as hundreds of hopeful contestants hurl themselves down a hill in the hope of winning some cheese at one of the UK's wackiest sports.

Footage captured on May 29 at Cooper's Hill, Gloucestershire, shows the moment competitors launched themselves down the hill risking serious injuries.

Amongst the winners was Matthew Crolla from Manchester, UK, who said he just "fancied it" when it came to taking part in the contest.

Travelling from Washington, US, Cooper Clifford Cummings beat the reigning champion Chris Anderson and revealed the event was on his bucket list for 10 years.

Anderson told the media after the race that Cooper was practising before and told him he was going to win it.

Further footage shows dozens of brave hopefuls tumbling down the hill with gasps heard from the crowd. Fortunately, no serious injuries have been reported so far.

Cheese rolling is rumoured to be around 600 years old with the first mention of the bizarre sport found in 1826.

The prize is a huge wheel of double Gloucester cheese and is given to whoever reaches the bottom of the hill first.
