There has been spectacular atmospheric optics displays captured across UK and Ireland over the last two days thanks to high pressure sunny weather and the presence of ice crystal-rich cirrus clouds. This evening (May 29th) I got a message from a friend alerting me to a spectacular sunpillar in the sky, I raced outside for a look and saw it, I had no time to drive out with the camera so I got my drone in the air instead. The pillar was the best I've seen for many many years, it was very tall and well defined and even looked big in the wide angle field of the drone's camera. In this footage the drone is actually moving however due to the dark foreground you can't see this. However when I zoom into the scene using x3 digital zoom you can see a very rare 'cross' formation within the pillar, I haven't seen anything like this in 25 years of sky watching. Likely an enhancement to the ice crystals there within the cirrus, but what a cool scene and a great way to end a beautiful day and warmest day of year.
