Colourful Red-Capped Parrots (Purpureicephalus spurius) are only found in southwestern Australia, where they are fairly common. Red-Capped Parrots have an unusually long upper mandible on their beak that is an adaptation to help them in extracting the small seeds from the woody fruits of their preferred plants, including Allocasuarina species (also known as Sheoaks) and the Marri (Corymbia calophylla). This gaudy male Red-Capped Parrot is extracting and eating the seeds of fallen woody Allocasuarina fruit. At one point he picks up a Marri gumnut, but it appeared to be empty of seeds, so he dropped it.
