A pair of bungling burglars walked straight into a swimming pool while carrying a businessman's safe out of the house.

The bizarre incident was filmed by a security camera outside the property in Nova Xavantina, Brazil, on May 24.

It shows how two crooks walked out of the house they have just burgled, carrying a large safe between them.

The home belongs to a licensed firearms collector, and the safe the pair had stolen reportedly contained three legally-owned guns.

The footage shows how the crook in front walked across the concrete yard, past a pair of barking dogs, and straight towards the swimming pool.

After falling in with a splash, he climbed out, and he and his accomplice then carried the safe out of the property.

The burglars had broken into the property while the homeowner was at the gym. When he returned home, he realised what had happened and called the police.

A few hours later, officers caught the pair as they loaded the stolen safe into a car. One, a teenager, fled, while the other was arrested.

Three others were also apprehended on suspicion of aiding and abetting the alleged crime.

As well as the safe, the police recovered two firearms and other belongings of the victim, including imported perfumes, a mobile phone, and watches.

The suspects' and victim's identities were withheld.

The Mato Grosso State Military Police said in a statement: 'An integrated operation between Military Police officers from the 3rd Independent Company, with the support of the Civil Police, arrested four men for forming part of a criminal organisation, theft, and illegal possession of firearms on Wednesday (24th May) in the municipality of Nova Xavantina (658 kilometres from Cuiaba).

'According to the police report, the teams were called after the victim reported that his residence in the Buritis neighbourhood had been broken into and the suspects had taken a safe and various items from the location.

'During patrols, a team from the Civil Police managed to apprehend two of the suspects in a wooded area, while the other two managed to escape from the scene. One of them was located shortly after by the Military Police.

'At the location where the suspects were detained, the teams found two revolvers, clothing, and tools used to break into the victim's house. One member of the criminal organisation stated that another suspect was a minor who had recently arrived from the state of Goias.

'Based on the security camera footage, the investigators identified that the Voyage vehicle used in the crime had the same characteristics as a car used to provide support in an attempted homicide case last Thursday (May 18).

'Subsequently, the driver of the car arrived at the Service Centre with two women, who turned out to be the mother and girlfriend of one of the suspects apprehended in the wooded area after the theft.

'The driver initially identified himself as a 'ride-hailing driver' but exhibited nervousness, provided contradictory information, and then stated that he was not associated with any transportation service company and did not have an internet connection for work purposes. The driver was placed under arrest and also taken to the police station for a police report to be filed and further necessary actions in the case to be taken.'
