Soaked tourists rushed to flee an overflowing waterfall when a sudden thunderstorm struck.

The families of holidaymakers were splashing in the scenic Majayjay Falls, hoping for a last-minute summer escapade in Laguna, the Philippines, on May 21.

It was sunny when they arrived, but the weather turned cloudy after a couple of hours, followed by rainfall.

Soon after, water gushed down the waterfall and the tourists - fearing their safety - grabbed their bags without changing their wet clothes and started to leave.

Footage shows the worried crowd walking away from the then-crystal-clear falls that gradually swamped the area.

Tourist Leonille Paolo Penales said: ‘While I was taking pictures, I noticed that the falls was bigger.

‘Everybody rushed to go as far away as possible from the falls. We didn't want to panic, but it was scary.'

While fleeing, the lifeguards assisted the tourists and sounded the alarm for evacuation.

The families walked in pairs against the slippery rocks and clutched plastic bags that contained their belongings.

Leonille added: ‘Fortunately, all the visitors had evacuated the area. There were no injuries, and everyone was safe.'
