A Malaysian man trapped in Mount Everest's "death zone", an area where temperatures can reach -30C, was rescued in a rare operation after being found shivering from extreme cold by Nepali guide Gelje Sherpa.

Sherpa found the climber while guiding a client to the Everest summit and bravely carried him down from 8,500m above sea level. It took him and other guides who joined later, six hours to bring the man to safety.

The footage shows the guide wrapping the climber in a sleeping mat before descending the world's highest mountain above sea level.

A helicopter then lifted the man from the 7,162m (23,500ft) high camp III down to base camp.

The operation was described as "very rare" by Nepali tourism official Bigyan Koirala, due to the challenges to rescue people at that altitude.

The footage was filmed on May 18.
